Article Overview
A UK spouse or partner visa application is only as strong as its documents. Many refusals happen not because the couple is ineligible, but because evidence is missing, covers the wrong period or does not match. Use this checklist to organise your file. For the income rules themselves, see our guide to the UK spouse visa financial requirement.
1. Identity and immigration history
- Applicant's current passport and any previous passports.
- Sponsor's passport, or proof of settled status or other qualifying status in the UK.
- Details of any previous UK or other visa applications and refusals.
2. Relationship evidence
- Marriage certificate or civil partnership certificate, with certified English translation if needed.
- For Pakistani marriages: the Nikah Nama and, where available, the NADRA marriage registration certificate.
- Evidence of a genuine and continuing relationship: photos together over time, communication records, travel records, visits.
- Evidence of living together, if you have done so: joint tenancy, bills or bank statements at the same address.
- If either partner was previously married: divorce certificate or death certificate of the former spouse.
3. Financial evidence
The documents depend on the income category, but typically include:
- Sponsor's payslips for the required period.
- Bank statements showing the salary paid in, for the same period.
- Employer letter confirming job title, salary, length of employment and contract type.
- For self-employment or company directors: tax returns, accounts, company documents and business bank statements.
- For savings: six months of bank statements and evidence of the source of the funds.
4. Accommodation
- Tenancy agreement or proof of ownership of the UK home where you will live.
- A letter from the property owner if you will live with family, confirming you can stay.
- Evidence that the accommodation is not overcrowded, such as a property inspection report in some cases.
5. English language
- A certificate from an approved English test at level A1 or above for the first application, or a degree taught in English recognised as equivalent.
6. TB test
- A tuberculosis test certificate from a Home Office approved clinic, as applicants from Pakistan coming for more than six months need one.
7. Children (if applying)
- Birth certificates showing both parents.
- Evidence of the parental relationship and care arrangements.
Presentation tips
- Translate all documents not in English, with certified translations that include the translator's details.
- Use the same spelling of names across all documents, or explain differences.
- Organise documents by section, in date order.
- Include a short cover letter that explains your relationship timeline and the income category used.
Common document mistakes
- Payslips and bank statements covering different periods.
- Missing the Nikah Nama translation or NADRA certificate.
- Relationship evidence that covers only a short period.
- An English test that is not on the approved list.
- No evidence of the source of savings.
