Article Overview
Dubai is one of the most popular destinations for Pakistani travellers, whether for tourism, family visits or business trips. Pakistani passport holders need a visit visa before travelling, and in recent years both visa approvals and airport entry checks have become stricter. This guide explains how to prepare properly.
Do Pakistanis need a visa for Dubai?
Yes. Pakistani nationals must obtain a visit visa before travelling to Dubai or any other emirate. Visa on arrival is not available for ordinary Pakistani passports, except in specific cases, for example for some holders of valid residence or visas from certain other countries, under rules that change from time to time.
Types of visit visa
- Short-term tourist visa: usually for 30 days.
- Long-term tourist visa: usually for 60 days.
- Multiple-entry visas: for frequent travellers, including longer-validity options.
- Visit visas sponsored by a relative: for family members of UAE residents who meet the sponsor conditions.
How to apply
Visit visas are applied for online through the official channels of the UAE authorities (ICP, or GDRFA for Dubai), through airlines that offer visa services, through a UAE-resident relative acting as sponsor, or through licensed travel agencies. Be careful with unofficial agents, and never pay for an offer that promises approval; only the UAE authorities decide.
Documents to prepare
- Passport valid for at least six months, with a clear scan of the bio page.
- Recent passport-size photo with a white background.
- Confirmed return or onward ticket.
- Hotel booking or, if staying with family, the host's details and Emirates ID copy.
- Recent bank statement showing funds for your stay.
- Travel and medical insurance covering the UAE.
- For business visitors, an invitation or meeting letter from the UAE company.
What happens at the airport
Having a visa does not mean entry is automatic. Immigration officers in Pakistan and in Dubai may ask about the purpose of your trip, where you will stay and how you will pay for it. Pakistani travellers have been denied boarding or entry when they could not show a return ticket, accommodation details or enough money for the visit. Carry printed or digital copies of:
- your return ticket;
- your hotel booking or host's address;
- evidence of funds, such as a bank card and a recent statement;
- your travel insurance.
Common mistakes
- Using a visit visa to look for work: visit visas do not allow employment. Travellers who appear to be coming to find work are a main reason for stricter checks.
- No return ticket: a one-way ticket often leads to questions or denied boarding.
- Booking hotels you then cancel: keep your booking valid until you travel.
- Overstaying: overstaying leads to daily fines and can result in a travel ban.
- Poor-quality documents: blurred passport scans and wrong photo sizes delay or block applications.
- Previous immigration issues: past overstays or absconding cases can lead to refusal.
Extending or changing your visa
Some visit visas can be extended from inside the UAE, depending on the visa type and current rules. Changing from a visit visa to a residence visa is possible in some cases, for example when an employer or family sponsor applies, but you must follow the official process and never work before your residence visa and labour permit are issued.
