Article Overview
The Innovator Founder visa is the UK route for experienced business people who want to set up and run an innovative company. Before you can apply for the visa, your business idea must be endorsed by a Home Office approved endorsing body. Endorsement is the hardest part of the route, so understanding how it works is essential.
What is an endorsing body?
Endorsing bodies are organisations approved by the Home Office to assess business ideas for the Innovator Founder route. The list changes over time, and only bodies currently approved for the route can issue new endorsements. Always check the current list on GOV.UK before choosing one, as several older bodies have been removed or can only support people they endorsed in the past.
The three endorsement criteria
Your business must meet all three tests:
- Innovative: the business must be new and offer something different from what is already on the market. Copying an existing model with small changes is not enough.
- Viable: you must have, or be actively developing, the skills, knowledge, experience and market awareness to run the business successfully.
- Scalable: there must be evidence of structured planning and potential for growth, such as job creation and expansion into national and international markets.
The endorsing body also checks that you are a suitable person to receive endorsement and that you have enough funding for your plans.
The business plan
Your business plan is the core of your application. A strong plan usually includes:
- A clear problem and how your product or service solves it.
- Why the idea is new compared with competitors.
- Market research specific to the UK.
- Your background and why you are the right person to deliver the plan.
- A realistic financial forecast and funding plan.
- Milestones for the first years, including hiring and growth.
Plans that are generic, copied or not supported by evidence are a common reason for rejection.
The endorsement process
- Choose an approved endorsing body that covers your sector.
- Submit your application and business plan, and pay the endorsement fee.
- Attend an interview or pitch if the body asks for one.
- Receive the decision. If successful, you receive an endorsement letter.
- Apply for the visa within three months of the endorsement date.
After endorsement: the visa application
With your endorsement letter, you apply to the Home Office. You must also meet the visa requirements, including English language at the required level and enough money to support yourself. Endorsement alone does not decide the visa; the Home Office still assesses your application.
Ongoing checks
Innovator Founder visa holders have contact point meetings with their endorsing body during their stay, usually at 12 and 24 months, to review progress against the plan. These checks matter for extensions and for settlement through this route.
Is the route right for you?
The route suits founders with a genuinely new idea, relevant experience and a realistic plan to grow in the UK. If your plan is a conventional business, such as a standard restaurant or consultancy, other routes such as UK Self Sponsorship may fit better.
