Article Overview
Malaysia is a popular study destination for Pakistani students thanks to lower costs, a short flight from Pakistan, a Muslim-majority environment and branch campuses of UK and Australian universities. The student visa process is handled mainly through your university, which makes it simpler than many other countries. This guide explains the steps.
Step 1: Get an offer from a recognised institution
Choose a course at a Malaysian public university, private university or branch campus approved to recruit international students. Once you meet the entry requirements, the institution issues an offer letter.
Step 2: The university applies through EMGS
International student applications are processed by Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS). You do not apply to EMGS directly; your institution submits the Student Pass application on your behalf, and you upload your documents and pay the processing fee through the system.
Step 3: Medical screening
You complete a medical screening at a clinic registered with EMGS, either before travel in Pakistan where available or after arriving in Malaysia, depending on the current process. The results are sent to EMGS.
Step 4: Visa Approval Letter (VAL)
Once EMGS and the immigration department approve your application, you receive an electronic Visa Approval Letter (eVAL). Pakistani nationals usually also need a single-entry visa to enter Malaysia, which is issued based on the VAL.
Step 5: Arrival and Student Pass
After arriving in Malaysia, you complete any remaining medical checks and submit your passport for the Student Pass endorsement. Do not plan international travel until the endorsement is complete.
Documents commonly required
- Valid passport with enough validity for your course.
- Offer letter from the institution.
- Academic certificates and transcripts.
- English test results if required by the course.
- Passport photos.
- Financial evidence if requested by the institution.
Timeline
The Student Pass process often takes around two months from application to approval, followed by a few weeks for the passport endorsement after arrival. Start early, especially for popular intakes.
Costs to plan for
Plan for tuition, the EMGS processing and visa fees, medical screening, insurance, accommodation and living costs. Living costs in Malaysia are generally lower than in the UK, Australia or Canada, especially outside central Kuala Lumpur.
Working while studying
International students in Malaysia can usually work part time only under specific conditions, typically during semester breaks or holidays and within limits on hours and job types. Check current rules with your institution before taking any work.
After graduation
Graduates who want to stay in Malaysia need a separate work pass from an employer. Many students use a Malaysian degree from a UK or Australian branch campus as a step to further study or work elsewhere.
