Article Overview
Choosing where to study is one of the biggest decisions you will make. The right country depends on your budget, your subject, your English or other language skills and what you want to do after graduating. This guide compares the main destinations Pakistani students consider, so you can narrow your shortlist before speaking to universities. You can also explore all our study abroad services.
Five questions to answer first
- What is your total budget? Include tuition, living costs, visa fees, health cover and travel, not only tuition.
- Which subject and level? Some countries are especially strong in engineering, medicine, business or research.
- Which language can you study in? English-taught options exist in most countries, but some, like Germany, offer more choice if you learn the local language.
- Do you need to work while studying? Work rights differ, and part-time income rarely covers all costs.
- What do you want after graduation? Post-study work options vary a lot between countries.
Comparing the main destinations
United Kingdom
Shorter degrees (one-year master's programmes are common) and globally recognised universities. Students can usually work up to 20 hours a week in term time. The Graduate route currently allows post-study work after graduation, although its length is being reduced for new applicants under recent policy changes. You must show maintenance funds and receive a CAS from your university. See our UK Student Visa service.
Canada
High-quality colleges and universities and a clear link between study and work for some graduates through the Post-Graduation Work Permit. Canada now limits the number of study permits and most applicants need a provincial attestation letter, so applying early is important. See our Canada Student Visa service.
Australia
Strong universities and lifestyle, with post-study work options for eligible graduates. Applicants must satisfy the Genuine Student requirement and show sufficient funds. Living costs are relatively high. See our Australia Student Visa service.
Germany
Low or no tuition at most public universities, which makes Germany attractive for budget-conscious students, especially in engineering and technology. You need a blocked account to prove living costs, and German language skills help greatly with daily life and jobs. See our Germany Student Visa service.
Ireland
English-speaking, with a strong technology and pharmaceutical sector and a post-study stay-back option for graduates. Living costs in Dublin are high. See our Ireland Student Visa service.
Italy and Hungary
Affordable tuition at public universities, growing numbers of English-taught programmes and scholarship opportunities for international students. Both are part of the Schengen area. See our Italy and Hungary student visa services.
Malaysia
Lower living costs, a short distance from Pakistan, a Muslim-majority environment and branch campuses of UK and Australian universities. See our Malaysia Student Visa service.
Budget: think in totals, not tuition
Make a simple sheet with tuition, rent, food, transport, health cover, visa fees and flights for each country. A country with low tuition but high rent may cost more overall than one with higher tuition and lower living costs. Many visas also require you to show living funds in advance, which affects how much money you need before you apply.
Plan your timeline
Most intakes are in September or October, with some in January or February. Start at least 9 to 12 months before your intended start date to allow time for tests, applications, offers, funds and the visa.
Common mistakes Pakistani students make
- Choosing a country based only on what friends did, without checking costs and rules.
- Underestimating living costs and the funds needed for the visa.
- Applying late, after scholarship and visa deadlines.
- Ignoring post-study rules, which change frequently.
