Article Overview
Australia's Student visa (Subclass 500) lets international students study at registered institutions. Since March 2024, every applicant must meet the Genuine Student (GS) requirement, which replaced the older Genuine Temporary Entrant test. For students from Pakistan, a well-prepared GS response and clear financial evidence are central to a successful application.
Basic requirements
- A Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from a course registered on CRICOS.
- Meeting the Genuine Student requirement.
- Enough money for tuition, living costs and travel.
- English language ability, usually through an accepted test.
- Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the whole stay.
- Health and character requirements.
What is the Genuine Student requirement?
The GS requirement asks whether you genuinely intend to study in Australia and whether studying is the main purpose of your stay. You answer targeted questions in the application. Officers consider your circumstances as a whole, including:
- your current situation: family, community, employment and economic ties in Pakistan;
- your study history and how the chosen course relates to it;
- why you chose this course and institution in Australia;
- how the course will benefit your future career;
- your immigration history in Australia and other countries.
Writing strong GS answers
- Be specific: name the course, the modules that matter to you and the career outcomes.
- Explain your progression: show how the course builds on your previous study or work.
- Explain your choice: why Australia, why this institution, and why not a similar course in Pakistan.
- Support your answers with evidence, such as transcripts, employment letters and financial documents.
- Write in your own words; copied or generic answers raise concerns.
Financial capacity
You must show funds for your first year of tuition, travel and living costs. The living cost figure for a single student is AUD 29,710 a year, with additional amounts for a partner and children if they come with you. Evidence can include bank deposits held over time, education loans, scholarships, or proof of a parent's or spouse's annual income at the required level. Pakistani applicants are often asked for detailed financial evidence, so make sure the source of funds is clear.
English language
Accepted tests include IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT and others, with minimum scores depending on the course. Some students are exempt, for example if they completed certain studies in English.
Health cover and medicals
You must buy OSHC for the full duration of your visa. A health examination may be required, depending on your circumstances and country of residence.
Work rights
Student visa holders can work a limited number of hours per fortnight while their course is in session and unlimited hours during scheduled breaks. After graduating, eligible students may apply for a Temporary Graduate visa (Subclass 485), subject to its current rules.
Common reasons for refusal
- GS answers that are generic or inconsistent with the documents.
- A course that does not fit the student's background or career plan.
- Unclear or recently deposited funds.
- Weak ties to Pakistan and an unclear plan after studies.
